Cribbage or Crib

Cribbage, or "Crib" as it has been shortened to, is a simple card game, requiring some thought, strategy and attention in order to play well, but leaving plenty of opportunity for discussion, joking,  fun and other expressions of friendship. Cribbage, or crib, is a card game traditionally for two players, but commonly played with three, four, or more, that involves playing and grouping cards in combinations which gain points. The interweaving of luck and skill in cribbage is particularly interesting.

Scrabble

Scrabble is a word game in which two to four players score points by forming words from individual lettered tiles on a gameboard marked with a 15-by-15 grid. The words are formed across and down in crossword fashion and must appear in a standard dictionary.

At Harwood House, we believe that scrabble not only helps you learn new words and definitions, it can improve your memory, enhance your language skills, and exercise your mind muscles for long-term learning and retention and at the same time having fun with friends using the words you've just discovered.

Quizzes

Who was the first prime minister of India? When was World War II fought? How many countries participated in common wealth games 2010?
Yes, this is all about having fun and having good time in our special formulated Quizzes. At Harwood House Day Centre we offer the Quizzes that suits your age and past and present time. It is participated by many and we do it in groups.

Draft

At Harwood House Day Centre we also offer Draft Board game to those who are interested. It is mostly commonly enjoyed by men but women are also welcome to join.

Drafts, Draughts (or checkers) is played by two players, on opposite sides of a playing board, alternating moves. One player has dark pieces, and the other has light pieces. It is against the rules for one player to move the other player's pieces. The player with the light pieces makes the first move unless stated otherwise. A move consists of a player moving their piece diagonally to an adjacent unoccupied square. If the square is occupied by an opponents' piece, it may be captured (and removed from the game) by jumping over it to the unoccupied square one square beyond the opponents piece.

Snooker

Snooker, generally regarded as having been invented in India by British Army officers, is popular in many of the English-speaking and Commonwealth countries.

At Harwood House we offer this game because we understand the individual benefits in improving your hand-and-eye coordination skills. This will enable you to focus more in the goal of pocketing each ball that you hit which means even those people who are on wheelchairs and are able to move their hands can engange themselves in this game.

This game improves the decision-making skills of an individual or team. We believe that players can also take benefit in strengthening intrapersonal attitudes. Players develop the ability of fast thinking through abrupt decision-making.

Model Making

Many of us have been captured by the allure of the narrow gauge railway for much of our lives. Characterful little trains with rich histories winding their way through beautiful sceneries of the countryside or hanging on the side of vertical cliffs prompt some of us to model them in miniature as a way of bringing the experience home and this has never been more fun than being done as a group.

At Harwood House we do try hard to encourage all those model making ethusiasts in participating in this activity as it improves their cognitive skills such as planning, problem solving and logical thinking. It is an activity that requires patience and focus.

Gardening

At Harwood House, gardening does not require you digging up the entire backyard as you normally do. Our garden is already prepared and it only need you to relax and enjoy the fresh air whilst picking a variety of fruits ranging from apples to pears and others seasonal fruits.

Picking apples has captured the interest in many and sitting in the garden has always been the first choice by everyone during our summer time.

Reading

If games don't appeal to the aging person, then reading material might do the trick.

Just as physical exercise improves circulation, mental exercise strengthens the mind and reading is the best mental exercise that will keep your brain busy even though you're not involved in any physical games and puzzles.

Our clients are offered a variety of books and daily newspapers which keeps them up to date with the current affairs.

Internet Access on a Computer

Knowledge of the Internet will help the senior citizens improve their mental alertness and make the feel not left out in this internet generation.
At Harwood House we believe that giving our clients internet access will
uplift their spirit through online communication with family and friends. It enhances self-esteem, a more cheerful outlook, gains independence, and feels much happier that they still experience  to interact more to people.  The Internet creates new life for them and that makes them feel young again.

We offer Skype and Yahoo Messenger which are the two most popular free service chat providers that seniors can avail. Video conferencing is the most satisfying experience that enable them to see live and talk with their loved ones who are away from home.

Bingo

By playing Bingo you can have fun, meet people, and stimulate your mind, which helps you stay mentally alert - this adds up to feeling young, and staying that way.

Here at Harwood House Day Centre, we understand that as elderly persons, you need all the exercise you can get to stay fit and healthy. Most of the time we can't perform certain exercises that have become too difficult for us. Mental stimulation, however, is another story. Playing bingo gives you enjoyment and fun, and helps you to keep alert. Many people enjoy their time at Harwood House by playing this favorite game, while chatting with their friends, and visiting with newcomers.

And many more.............
